If you have time for one, I would suggest Ken Smith's "The Way of the Hermit," although I found all four books engrossing and, to be sure, engaging because some aspects of the hermit's life appeal to me too. Never a joiner, as a kid I was happy to be working on some nutty little project (trying to make a printing press, for example, and a loom) and not really eager to be sent out the door to "play." I was already having fun. Smith's book is full of wonderful, surprising moments.
